Apple Mail Searching

Ok, what to do? No big deal: Ask the internet. So far so good. I’m not the only one having the problem. Somehow the problem is related to a screwed up Spotlight indexing. So people suggest to get rid of the “.Spotlight-V100” directory, which contains the index. No big deal too.

I deleted the folder but for my boot drive it wasn’t recreated. Strange... checking what Spotlights knows with: mdutils -as showed that my boot drive wasn’t indexed at all. Hmm... ok, setting indexing to on, is no big deal again: sudo mdutil -i on /

And I got: “Error: unable to perform operation. (-100)” I like it when there is no cause given in clear text. Whatever I did, I was unable to get Spotlight to handle my boot drive.

The solution is again pretty simple, if you know it: Just kill the two processes mds and mdworker. OSX will recognize this and restart them. And this fixed my problem. After the processes were restarted I could use the above commands.
